FGM

One of the four Islamic schools of religious law, the Shafi'i school, rules that clitoridectomy is mandatory. Other sects are adamant about the practice. In 1994, Egyptian Mufti Sheikh Jad Al-Hâqq 'Ali Jad Al-Hâqq issued a fatwa stating, "Circumcision is mandatory for men and for women. If the people of any village decide to abandon it, the village imam must fight against them as if they had abandoned the call to prayer." The Al-Azhar University in Cairo has issued several fatwas endorsing FGC, in 1949, 1951 and 1981. FGM is illegal in Europe but some Islamists continue to break the law and persist with this vile practice - they must be persistently investigated, exposed and stopped.

Honour Killings

An honour killing is generally a punitive murder, committed by members of a family against a female member of their family whom the family and/or wider community believe to have brought dishonour upon the family. A woman is usually targeted for: refusing an arranged marriage, being the victim of a sexual assault, seeking a divorce — even from an abusive husband — or committing adultery. These killings result from the perception that a woman has behaved in a way that "dishonours" her family is sufficient to trigger an attack on her life. Though not an exclusivity of extreme Islamists, extreme Islamist enclaves in Europe suffer more than most communities from honour killings.

Forced Marriages

Forced marriages in modern Western Europe are generally committed within migrant communities. Most of the involuntary spouses are women, although men may be forced into such marriages as well. Forced marriages are generally arranged because of family pride, the wishes of the parents, or social obligation. For example, according to Ruqaiyyah Waris Maqsood, many forced marriages in Britain within the Pakistani Muslim community are aimed at providing British citizenship to a member of the family presently in Pakistan to whom the instigator of the forced marriage feels a sense of duty. According to Sharia Law forced marriages are forbidden, so this means that forced marriages aren't Islamic yet extreme Islamists continue to force their sons and daughters into marriages against their will, often cognizant of polygamous circumstances. The unhappiness created cannot be underestimated and the practice of forced marriages needs exposing and legislating against. Western society and the United Nations view forced marriage as a form of human rights abuse, since it violates the principle of the freedom and autonomy of individuals - V7 simply strives to reinforce this civilised notion.
